In the 1990’s, I had the great pleasure and honor of making most of the non-Ansel technical illustrations in John P. Schaefer’s books, The Ansel Adams Guide: Basic Techniques of Photography, books 1 and 2. In the 1999 Revision of Book 1, John wanted to illustrate the film-exposure effect of “reciprocity failure,” the fact that with multi-second exposure times, shadow tones record more slowly than highlight values, and extra exposure time is required to get desired shadow densities on the film. This results in highlight values being whiter than they normally would be. I made this still-life to show how that “failure” could be used to advantage in making the eggs much brighter than a light-meter indicated they measured. 4x5 Kodak T-Max 100, 4 minute exposure.
