In April and May of 1976, Ansel and I spent the better part of two months driving around California with the purpose of him making fine-art black-and-white Polaroid 4x5 prints to include in each copy of his final portfolio, Portfolio VII. Ansel had been a close associate of Edwin Land and Polaroid Corporation for decades, and the inclusion of these prints in the portfolio was meant to celebrate that relationship and the Polaroid image quality. The pleasure for me was riding shotgun during the project and watching Ansel’s passion for making creative photographs.
On this one day in Yosemite, Ansel set up his 4x5 camera 12 times, making a whopping 29 prints! This image of him was late afternoon and our second visit to Inspiration Point. (It will never be “Tunnel View” for me!) I set my own camera up and captured the maestro at work.
