In early February 1976, the phone rang at Ansel’s and I picked it up. A squeaky voice on the other end asked if Ansel were there, and I politely asked who was calling. The voice said "Georgia O’Keeffe" and I immediately answered, “Yes he’s here, let me get him for you!” Ansel spoke with her for quite a while, and after they had hung up, he quietly said, “O’Keeffe has some business in the area and will be staying with us for about a week!"

During her stay and two days after Ansel’s 74th birthday, he had me get out the Hasselblad – he was going to photograph O’Keeffe and her assistant Juan Hamilton. Ansel posed O’Keeffe in a chair near a living room window and made several exposures. O’Keeffe then moved to a chair just inside the window and Juan took her place in the chair she had been sitting in. I was able to make a few photographs of my own and it was wonderful to be able to capture this moment of Ansel photographing Juan, with O’Keeffe in the background!  Print #1 of this image is now in the permanent collection of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. Nikkormat FTN Kodak Tri-X Pan
