I made this photo during a 1975 Friends of Photography workshop field session. I had been Ansel’s assistant for just about a year, and my primary workshop duties were helping Ansel with his sessions and also helping out at some of the other sessions.

One of the groups I was assisting met in a wooded area that was a favorite of photographer Wynn Bullock. The light was beautifully soft. I tried to stay out of the way of the students and instructor, but the 80-200mm lens on my Nikkormat gave me the opportunity to capture this beautiful, almost sculptural design of our session model.

Shortly after the workshop, I made my first print of the image. Ansel asked if he could use a slide of it in a photo lecture he was going to be doing at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. When he returned to Carmel after giving that talk, Ansel told me that the day after his lecture, someone called him at his hotel and asked about the "Weston nude" he had shown.  Ansel told him that it was not a Weston photo, but that of his associate, Alan Ross. The guy hung up!
