CURVED DUNE, DEATH VALLEY

Four days into a 2002 Ansel Adams Gallery Death Valley workshop, our group made an early morning trek into the sand dunes northeast of Stovepipe Wells. The rising sun broke its eastern horizon on our way into the dunes and we were rewarded with no wind and and an exquisite stillness.

At first, I was taken with the curve of this dune, but the crisp light on some distant dunes distracted me, and I made a horizontal image. Nice, but not “it." I moved a bit to the right, and the curve of the foreground dune edge screamed out to me. I  turned the format to vertical and I knew I had it.
